Not a bad collision just a car sliding on the ice bumped me into another car then slid back along side me. Front and Rear bumpers slight damage but all four doors were dented enough to require replacement. Needless to say it was totaled The accident happened at a speed slower than you could walk.
I now have an F30 i Xdrive with the N20 4 cylinder engine. I needed a car and most seem to have the 4 cylinder. I drove it and it seemed to perform just fine. This one however sounds like a diesel It doesn't matter whether or not it's cold or warm. I took it into the dealership and they told me it was normal.
I went back when it was exceptionally loud and the technician took the oil filter out and said the was a small bit of metal in the filter and that he would open a case with BMW. I got a call and was told that BMW instructed them to replace the oil filter and return the car back to me. They didn't even drain and replace the oil in the engine. The whole thing makes no sense to me BMW will have you replace bolts, nuts and washers when performing repairs.
The dealer told me that there is some noise to be expected I don't want to drive a car that sounds like a diesel or a John Deere tractor. I have had BMWs for 25 years and absolutely frustrated here. I have found that many others have complained of this issue Has anyone had experience with this at all or is it just my luck of the draw.The BMW N54 engine might be the best tuner engine of all time…at least we think so.

No difference in drive or performance as I say but a horrid knocking sound at idle when it feels like doing it. Don't know if its the item to the RH side of the engine block or the alternator below.
Any ideas at all guys? Thanks in advance. I don't see what it can really be with no difference in performance or anything else and only does it at idle The pump runs on the same belt as the alternator so by removing that belt you can start the car which will tell you if it's internal or not.

Have you checked the tension of the timing chain? You can access it when you remove the oil filler cap. Timing chains don't knock though, more of a rattle. Regarding the knock, remove the aux belt and try it again. AC pumps are amazing fun to change btw.

But what a difference between a and ! My wife has a i xDrive and engine sound is very different. As has already been posted the N20 has a very distinctive clatter at idle caused by the high pressure injectors used in a direct injection engine as opposed to port injection engines. The new B48 is better and sounds slightly less like a diesel my wife's new 4 door hardtop Mini Cooper S has this engine.
I have heard the N55s and they are not as bad but can also sound quite noisy, not at all like the creamy sounds of the older port injection, but less efficient, engines.Fn p90 holster
